Greek tragedy · Euripides
Troianes
About the production
After ten years of war, the city of Troy has fallen. The men and boys are slaughtered by the victorious army, and the women are cast out to the city gates, onto the beach, left to whatever fate the triumphant heroes decide for them.
Hecuba, Cassandra, Andromache, Helen and all the other nameless women suffer in their own flesh the universal fate of the greatest losers of every war. War is born of men, but it is women who suffer it most atrociously.
Throughout history, the violence, force and calamity they have endured has been captured in Euripides' classical tale — and also in the testimonies of other wars, of other women of our own time who have likewise suffered abuse, rape and misery in their own flesh, as trophies of battle.
